Task & Purpose: The Navy Just Called Bulls–t On Reports That A US Warship Is Lurking In Syrian Waters

As the world waits to see if President Donald Trump will launch military strikes against Syria, you can count on the media to provide you with nuanced, well-sourced stories that provide context…. Oh, who are we kidding: It’s like watching pigs in shit.

One of the most egregious offenders so far has been CNN Turk, which reported that the destroyer USS Donald Cook is lurking off the Syrian coast, ready to retaliate against a Syrian chemical weapons attack with 60 Tomahawk cruise missiles. CNN Turk also reported that the ship had been buzzed at least four times by Russian aircraft. The story has been aggregated by other media outlets.

On the surface, the story looked like a blatant OPSEC violation. Citing “Pentagon offcials,” CNN Turk did practically everything except tell the Syrians, Russians, Iranians, and Hezbollah where best to hit the Donald Cook with their anti-ship missiles, or at least disrupt their mission.

Update: Reports of US destroyer being harassed by Russian jets in Syrian waters are false, US Navy says (Navy Times)

Previous Post: Russian Warplanes Are 'Harassing' The U.S. Destroyer USS Donald Cook Off The Coast Of Syria

WNU Editor: The Russian press, Russian Ministry of Defense, and the Kremlin have been completely silent on this story .... which is not normal. In the past they would deny a story if they believed it was untrue, or explain it if it was true. But on this story .... nothing. This tells me that they are focused elsewhere .... and Russian warplanes buzzing a US warship is not a story that needs to be covered.

Update #2: Another U.S. missile destroyer is being rushed to the eastern Mediterranean .... US Reportedly 2nd Second Missile Destroyer to Syrian Coast As Tensions Shoot Up (Sputnik).

Will the US and allies hit Syria in the next 48 hours? I hope not, but I fear the geopolitical plan to flip these old Soviet client states will continue.

Rule of thumb. The media is as trust worthy as a snake handling preacher.

Who you going to trust? Your own judgment and fact finding skills.

Bert Bert,

I hope there is not a plan to try and flip old Soviet client states. There's no way Russia would allow that to happen. Just a Russian perception of this alone could well be enough for them to engage us militarily in a war we may not be able to win. This combined with no real upside to "flipping" these states mixed with huge cost in trying to do so means the appropriate policy would be to publically and forcefully make it clear to the Russians we are NOT trying to do this nor will we do so.

If such a plan exists, perhaps this explains or at lesst partially explains the fear that the leadership has towards president Trump. On some level, he understands the folly of such approaches and, jf he found out, he would act to change such things.

Also, it may even be the real reason why some have suggested POTUS should be denied access to intelligence even making up fairy tales about an unstable mental state. Such a person would a major threat to such a plan. I really do hope such a plan does not exist.

Anonymous,

"Who you going to trust? Your own judgment and fact finding skills." This is true. There's little I could add. With that said I've been amazed at how two people can examine the same information, at the same time, and under the same conditions yet come to completely different conclusions!! I would say always challenge your presumptions!!
