Report: U.S. Strikes Killed 200 Russian Contract Fighters In Syria Last Week During A Failed Military Attack (Update)

Bloomberg: U.S. Strikes Killed Scores of Russian Fighters in Syria, Sources Say

* More than 200 contract soldiers are said to have been killed
* The casualties dwarf official Russian army death toll in Syria

U.S. forces killed scores of Russian contract soldiers in Syria last week in what may be the deadliest clash between citizens of the former foes since the Cold War, according to a U.S. official and three Russians familiar with the matter.

More than 200 mercenaries, mostly Russians fighting on behalf of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, died in a failed attack on a base and refinery held by U.S. and U.S.-backed forces in the oil-rich Deir Ezzor region, two of the Russians said. The U.S. official put the death toll at about 100, with 200 to 300 injured.

The Russian assault may have been a rogue operation, underscoring the complexity of a conflict that started as a domestic crackdown only to morph into a proxy war involving Islamic extremists, stateless Kurds and regional powers Iran, Turkey and now Israel. Russia’s military said it had nothing to do with the attack and the U.S. military accepted the claim. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis called the whole thing “perplexing,” but provided no further details.

WNU Editor: This has been the Kremlin's response .... Kremlin: We have no information about Russian mercenaries killed in Syria (Reuters). Over the weekend I personally came across the claim in a few websites and Russian social media that 100 - 200 Russian contractors were killed .... I did not post those stories because I was skeptical of the sources. Bloomberg is saying that three Russians and a U.S. official are backing this story. Hmmmm .... I am not sure about those Russian sources.

Update: The names of the Russians who were killed are becoming known (five have been identified) .... Russian Fighters Killed in U.S. Airstrikes in Syria Identified (Moscow Times).

It's sad to see Russians die.

But may I ask. .why did they cross the deescalation line and attack the base? Are they trying to start ww3 or what the f were they thinking? Or just suicidal and amped up on Russian propaganda of the strong warrior myth? We see what Russian competition looks like at the Olympics when the state sanctioned doping is gone. Not very convincing. Not very strong. But very stupid to do.
