Turkish President Erdogan Vows To Destroy The Kurdish Enclave In Northwest Syria

Bloomberg: Erdogan Repeats Warning of Attack on Kurdish Enclave in Syria

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signaled Turkish forces may soon carry out an attack on a Kurdish stronghold in northwest Syria, a day after the army shelled the area.

Turkey regards the Kurdish YPG forces who control Afrin as a terrorist group with links to the PKK, which has long battled for autonomy in Turkey’s southeast. The Kurds received U.S. backing as the most effective local proxies against Islamic State in Syria, and the policy of arming them stoked tension between the NATO allies.

“In coming days, we will continue our operations in Afrin to clear our southern border” of terrorists, Erdogan told a meeting of his party in Tokat province on Sunday. Turkish officials vowed similar action on several occasions last year.

If I was Erdogan I would rethink this move of his.

Why rethink it?

I do not want to see Erdogan to succeed.

I don't know that the Syrian Kurds would give much assistance to Turkish Kurds for fear of losing what they have. I could see a Turkish Kurd, or a 'mountain Turk' as a chauvinist Turks do say, hiding out in Syrian until the heat died down.

I take it that Erdogan does not want the Syrian Kurdish area to be a Cambodia or Pakistan FATA. After going after & succeeding(?) against Syrian Kurds, the Turkish Kurds would be next.

Non-Turks make up 25 to 37% of the population. You may be able to further break out the Alevis. If Erdogan wants to weaken Turkey, going after every Turkish citizen, who is non-Sunni Turk would be a way of succeeding.
Assad wouldn't be happy if Turkey put more Turkish forces into Syria even if it sped the demise of Kurdish autonomy. It might create a dangerous vacuum.

Turks are probably more Greek than Turk (<40%) genetically anyway. Erdogan should get over himself.
