The Warzone/The Drive: Almost All of the UK's Surface Combatants Are in Port While Germany Has No Working Subs

These already worrying developments reflect poor readiness overall and other larger issues within both of these NATO navies.

British and German naval forces are both suffering from historically low readiness, with almost all of the Royal Navy’s destroyers and frigates in port and none of Germany’s submarines in working order. This only underscores existing concerns about both organizations spending priorities match their needs and their abilities to respond to crises close to home and outside of Europe.

On Dec. 20, 2017, the Royal Navy acknowledged that only one of its 13 Type 23 frigates, HMS St. Albans, was on duty protecting the United Kingdom’s national waters and that all six of its Type 45 destroyers were also pierside. Two months earlier, after an accident crippled the submarine U-35, the German Navy, or Deutsche Marine, was similarly forced to concede that this meant that all six of its Type 212A boats were sidelined for repairs.

No working subs for Germany and yet they have sold at least four submarines to Israel

Why is that such a big deal wrt Germany? Germany has cut down its army on purpose to bare minimum after ww2 and spends about 1.5% of its gdp on defence. What do you expect? 10 subs? Lol Uk is something different. .they didn't go the pacifist route like Germany did and once had the biggest navy in the world. .but mixing these up and pretending its an outrage or an embarrassment in the case of Germany is just wrong. They export most of their subs

Its facts like these that show Trump is right to be skeptical about NATO's utility to the USA. The US defense situation, ugly though it is, looks mighty compared to Germany, France and the British militaries. An alliance this strapped for war fighting assets isn't very useful and probably need not exist.

Because it makes no practical difference for UK if a ship is in UK or overseas at xmas - they will be alongside regardless. 13 RN ships overseas/deployed in 4 oceans next week. Only one other navy can do this.

I think it's a bit misinformed commentary here regarding Nato. Nato is not meant to attack anyone. It's an entirely defensive agreement. By 2024 member states have to increase their spending to 2% gdp. To the commentator above: if the US were to get attacked nato provides automatic, guaranteed assistance to the US, and has done so before:

Nato member states:
28 + USA

September 12, 2001 - For the first time, NATO invokes Article V, the Washington Treaty, its mutual defense clause, in support of the United States after the terrorist attacks.

Germany, UK, France, Canada etc commit tens of thousands (!) of soldiers during the coming conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq and other places for years to come and many die. Blood shed for America. USA should remember the dead on our side during the George W Bush wars. In addition hundreds of planes (combat and logistics) were provided during those conflicts. Total cost to member states at that time (excluding USA): $560bn

Questions asked? None. It happened automatically within minutes of invoking the article. Please be better informed when you talk smack about Nato and its member states.

Germany wasn't even allowed to have a standing army until very recently due to commitments to pacifism after WW2 (part of Marshal plan agreement)

"Germany has cut down its army on purpose to bare minimum after ww2 and spends about 1.5% of its gdp on defence"

German is required by NATO to spend 2%.

Beyond that posture of an animal, a person, or a nation determines whether it will be singled out for predation.

German under Merkel shows no such demeanor that it is determined to do much of anything except keep the EU economic arrangement intact and invite invaders in.

Germany is under Merkel tough. She is tough on Poland. She is not tough on Russian or Iran or anyone like that. Putin understands what a weak candy___ Merkel is. It is why he brought a large dog to a meeting with Merkel. Putin knows what a weak leader Merkel is.

Merkel has not formed a government in the 3 or 4 months since the election. It has never goner on this long before. Previously it has been one month. That Merkel get 4 month and who know how much longer shows that she is an affirmative action poltician like Obama.

Merkel will not get another month if there is another Christmas Massacre by Muslims. The schumer, Merkel, is at the mercy of Islamicist operational tempo and the ability of the police to be one step ahead of them. But the police have already said they could not monitor them all since there are too many . She has brought in too many and wants to bring in more. That shows what a schumer she is.

" It's an entirely defensive agreement. "

Having a good defence means having the training, the material and the mindset.

If the ships are in port and not sailing there is a limit to the amount of hands on practical training that can occur.

It all shows a lack of will power or determination. That is a dangerous thing to show an aggressive type.
