Business Insider/Washington Examiner: Mattis estimates nearly 20% of the US military's property around the world may be unneeded

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told Congress that an estimated 19 percent of U.S. military properties around the world might be unneeded and he is pressing lawmakers to allow him to take a closer look.

Mattis provided the 19-percent-excess-capacity figure in a report to Congress earlier this month in what is the latest push by the Pentagon to get lawmakers to permit a new review of properties under the Base Realignment and Closure program, or BRAC, which could result in the shuttering of excess facilities in the 2020s.

Actually I believe US deployments outside of the US need to be scaled back. We have not really been able to have this debate because it generally ends up being hijacked by hysterical anti-Americanism. It would be nice to see a general of the status as Mr. Mattis initiate this.

I suspect 20% is a small number and needs to/could be much more. I think about 99.5% of properties around the world are not needed. Getting unbound from the current situations if done properly may take some time and it will likely need to be/should be coordinated with those living in the various countries where these properties are.
