New York Times: Trump Team Met With Lawyer Linked to Kremlin During Campaign

Two weeks after Donald J. Trump clinched the Republican presidential nomination last year, his eldest son arranged a meeting at Trump Tower in Manhattan with a Russian lawyer who has connections to the Kremlin, according to confidential government records described to The New York Times.

The previously unreported meeting was also attended by Mr. Trump’s campaign chairman at the time, Paul J. Manafort, as well as the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, according to interviews and the documents, which were outlined by people familiar with them.

While President Trump has been dogged by revelations of undisclosed meetings between his associates and Russians, this episode at Trump Tower on June 9, 2016, is the first confirmed private meeting between a Russian national and members of Mr. Trump’s inner circle during the campaign. It is also the first time that his son Donald Trump Jr. is known to have been involved in such a meeting.

WNU Editor: The Magnitsky Act has been a sore point with Russia since it was passed into law by the US Congress in 2012, and Russia's ban of adoptions (which I do not support) has been a sore point for many families in the West who want to adopt. The Russian lawyer at the meeting, Natalia Veselnitskaya, from what I have read is the person who you would want to meet if the Magnitsky Act and adoptions are the reason for the meeting. Was this the only topic discussed .... on the U.S. side the answer they are giving is yes .... on the Russian side there has been no response. Is this a big story .... if the Magnitsky Act had been dropped, and in return Russia lifted the ban on international adoptions (or not) .... the answer would be a definite yes .... because it would suggest that a quid-pro-quo agreement was made with Russia during the campaign. But the Magnitsky Act has not been dropped, and Russia's ban on adoptions is still enforced. Unless the New York Times has anything more to add to it .... this story is going nowhere. To put it bluntly .... Trump officials meeting a Russian lawyer on an issue that is deeply personal for many Americans (i.e. adoptions) is in my book the decent thing to do .... the NYT is really stretching it if this is their big story for them. Now what would be a big story is if we had a New York Times headline like this .... "Trump campaign officials met with Kremlin connected lawyer. Magnitsky Act dropped. Pay-off for Russian help and collusion during the campaign?" Yup .... that would be a big story .... but the problem is that it did not happen.

Update: Apparently this is not the big story that the New York Times is claiming .... Donald Trump Jr. gathered members of campaign for meeting with Russian lawyer before election (CIRCA).

As editor notes: may not truly be a story but our awesome editor should note that Manafort is now a registered foreign agent and, at that meeting, was not known and declared as one.

Fred. Awesome editor?!?!?! You should meet my GF. Awesome is not in her vocabulary when it comes to me. Her Rottweiler .... yes. Me no.

I have mentioned it before .... this registering as a foreign agent was/is going to give some of Trump's campaign officials headaches. Case in point .... Michael Flynn. If you want to work in government you must always respect the paperwork .... if not .... expect problems.

That's so sad to see media to have to search any stories in the bottom of garbage. The goal is not to do politic but make dirt.

The Magnitsky Act should not have been passed. This represents meddling in the affairs of a foreign country that we don't understand. As for denying cettain individuals access to the US banking system, all this accomplishes is to speed up the inevitable loss of the US dollar as world reserve currency and all but ensures a "hard landing" instead of the "soft landing" for the US that needs to be the goal.

As such, repealing this act seems experential common sense regardless what Russia does or doesn't do with regards to Russia's ban on adoptions. While I can unserstand Russia's position on this given their demographic challenges, I agree with you in your opposition to this.

Given Russia's demographic challenges I don't think they are going to budge on this regardless what America does with regards to Magnitsky. Since repealing Magnitsky is in America's intersts, this should be done regardless. IF team Trump could sonehow get Rusdia to budge on foreign adoptions, THIS would be the BIG STORY. Mothers and fathers being united with the children they had been trying to adopt before this all started. It'd be awesome if this were the story and perhaps we could put all this nonsense behind us and DJT and his team could move on toward accomplishing the big things they set out to accomplish.

While not named specifically, ending Cold War 2 would be a great acvomplishment not to mention a great legacy. To do so will mean overcoming the mass insanity of numerous powerful Americans.

Russia banned adoptions by Belgians.

I estimate 90% or more of conservatives, who hear of it on talk radio are on board with the Russian decision.

Too many European leaders think their stuff does not stink. They think Trump is the problem. So why did Russia ban Belgian adoptions?
