Washington Post: Massive cyberattack hits Europe with widespread ransom demands

MOSCOW — A new wave of powerful cyberattacks hit Europe on Tuesday in a possible reprise of a widespread ransomware assault in May that affected 150 countries, as Ukraine reported ransom demands targeting the government and key infrastructure, and the Danish Maersk conglomerate said many of its systems were down.

Reports of attacks spread quickly on Tuesday afternoon. The Russian oil giant Rosneft and a subsidiary, Bashneft, were also hit, as was the British advertising and marketing multinational WPP. Norway’s National Security Authority said an “international company” there was affected, and Martijn Pols, a spokesman for the Port of Rotterdam, said one shipping company, APM Terminals, was targeted.

The virus even hit systems monitoring radiation at the site of the former Chernobyl nuclear power plant, where computers running Windows were temporarily knocked offline. By late Tuesday morning, reports of cyberattacks had spread as far as India and the United States.

Sometime in the future people, who use ransomware, will face life imprisonment, the death penalty or being taken out by the government off the record.

Sometime in the future people will die because of ransomware attacks, or it will cost so much that they will not be able to afford what they need.

I for one would never convict someone accused of murdering a ransomware thief.

It might be white collar crime, but they need to be dead.

Would the author of this site be so kind as to republish the report of the way Russia used cyber warfare to attack Eastern Ukraine and Crimea. I thought that was novel stuff. Very clever.
I expect the Russians attacked some of their own soft targets just to make it look good?

Aaron. Today's attacks hit a few big Russian banks. Memo to everyone .... Russians freak out when they cannot get their money out of a bank (the early 1990s Russian economic and financial crisis is still remembered by a lot of Russians .... this expat included).

Past Russian attacks were more of a denial of service .... crashing a server because of an overload in requests. But todays attacks .... targeting the root directory of every-drive and rewriting everything .... now this is scary stuff because you will lose your computer/information/data.
