Reuters: Duterte says China's Xi threatened war if Philippines drills for oil

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said on Friday Chinese counterpart China Xi Jinping had warned him there would be war if Manila tried to enforce an arbitration ruling and drill for oil in a disputed part of the South China Sea.

In remarks that could infuriate China, Duterte hit back at domestic critics who said he has gone soft on Beijing by refusing to push it to comply with an award last year by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, which ruled largely in favor of the Philippines.

Duterte said he discussed it with Xi when the two met in Beijing on Monday, and got a firm, but friendly warning.

"We intend to drill oil there, if it's yours, well, that's your view, but my view is, I can drill the oil, if there is some inside the bowels of the earth because it is ours," Duterte said in a speech, recalling his conversation with Xi.

"His response to me, 'we're friends, we don't want to quarrel with you, we want to maintain the presence of warm relationship, but if you force the issue, we'll go to war."

So much for that bromance.

Duterte is highly unstable, erratic and loves his temper tantrums. He would do it, he's certainly insane enough.

Duterte should drill.

The problem with Neville Chamberlain was that he could not calculate. He did not ant to go to war because Britain was ill prepared. The balance of power was unfavorable.

So he wanted to ramp up the strength of the British military.

While Britain was ramping up, what did he think Germany would do?

So the balance of power could have been better, the same or worse.

The whole we cannot go to war now ids bogus. It was bogus in 1938 and it is bogus now.

What is really sad is that Germany took over France with fewer tanks and worse tanks than France and Britain had.

The Germans actually took over France with tanks that had no guns.

It was a glorified armored car; a tracked armored car . It had 2 small, baby machine guns.

It is so ludicrous. It would not be more ludicrous than if the U.S. beat the Russians I War and 10% of the tactical aircraft used by the Americans were T-45 trainers.

Better war now than later.
