President Trump Calls Chinese President Xi Telling Him That The U.S. Will Honor 'One China' Policy

New York Times: Trump Tells Xi Jinping U.S. Will Honor ‘One China’ Policy

WASHINGTON — President Trump told President Xi Jinping of China on Thursday evening that the United States would honor the “One China” policy, reversing his earlier expressions of doubt about the longtime diplomatic understanding and removing a major source of tension between the United States and China since shortly after he was elected.

In a statement, the White House said Mr. Trump and Mr. Xi “discussed numerous topics, and President Trump agreed, at the request of President Xi, to honor our One China policy.” It described the call as “extremely cordial” and said the leaders had invited each other to visit.

As you pointed out elsewhere, the US cannot continue the trade imbalance with China that is the current situation indefinitely. The trade agreements have to be renegotiated.

Are DJT and his team the people to do this? I hope so but am skeptical. The dealmaker has likely never negotiated from a position of weakness. At best, the US is equal to China. In other ways, China is the stronger country.

In order to get China to agree to negotiate, we were obviously going to have to agree to the one China policy. We will probably have to accept China's position on the South China Sea as well. There's probably nothing we can do to change it or stop it anyway and the trade agreements need to be renegotiated.

This may be the price that has to be paid. We may not like it. Reality does not care if we don't like it. It cannot be changed. The best approach is to recognize reality , adjust to it, and act accordingly. Do this and good outcomes are not only possible but probable. Failure to do so generally leads to nothing good.
