News.com.au: Report predicts drones and supersoldiers are the future of warfare

ROBOTS calling the shots in the skies, while technologically advanced supersoldiers patrol the ground — this is the future of warfare according to a new report predicting combat over the coming decades.

The report, Visualizing the Tactical Ground Battlefield in the Year 2050, was the result of a workshop held with leaders from the US Defence Department, Army Research Lab, Institute for Defence Analysis and a select number of academia.

In the world envisioned, armed drones will patrol the skies searching for enemy targets to eliminate.

The use of drones in the current military landscape dictates it is always a human that decides to pull the trigger, but the report suggests soldiers may only have limited control over the smart-robots of the future.

“The difference being that in the former, human decisions are a required step in a process and thus humans are exercising positive control,” the report stated.

WNU Editor: The report is predicting that this scenario will be in play in about 35 years .... my prediction is that this will be happening sooner rather than later.

Of course the future will be drones and robots. Anyone who has watched Hollywood productions of what the world will look like in the future knows that. Not because Hollywood suggests and it looks sexy, but because the fiction writers who got this trend going have in effect provided the high level functional specifications, the view of what the end product should look like. If follows that mankind will take those high level specs and begin to work out the details.

The television series Flash Gordon, of the late 40s/50s, laid out the high level specs for space travel. Mankind isn't quite into the travel part but it is coming.

Time travel? they are still working on that one.

After time travel, perhaps heaven and eternal life.

Robots: On a serious note.
In robotics there are three main areas of speculation that touch directly on military applications and somewhat on people/robotic ethics.
Self awareness (consciousness): freedom from human judgement and/or control. First what kind of self awareness would this be? An individual awareness distinct to each machine or a group awareness ala the "Borg" STTNG? Would this give rise to individual decisions based on individual ethics? If so what is to keep machine from fighting machine for their own reasons? The same could be said for a group awareness, would you have machine group fighting machine group for reasons organic to the machines themselves? Humans through religion, philosophy, logic, drugs, etc have spent the last 5,000+yrs at least trying to understand our own consciousness
and still haven't come to a conclusion, what possible extrapolations could we make about machines?
Self replication: Just how would they go about this without recreating entire technologies, engineering, and manufacturing abilities that would be self portable in an on demand fashion?
Energy/longevity: Some would refer you to self/replication above. It would assume eternal existence and you would then be in the territory of the divine, which I would not know how to debate.
Humans must think of the future and even make plans upon those conjectures, what I find a little disturbing is this attitude of pseudo knowingness of a very profound subject. The human race though will barge onward though and what will come will come. And you're absolutely right WNU, it'll come sooner rather than later.
So it really does come to "Danger Will Robinson".

There are many rumors that the Russians have made great strides in resolving some of these drawbacks. One such group is rumored to be based in the Laurentines of Canada with the cover name B&B Inc (Beavers and Borscht Inc).

Congrats James you listed a number of requirements necessary for the development of more detailed functional specifications. Of course there will be risks but once the full specifications document is produced, some entity will start developing the robots believing that all possible consequences have been covered, except of course the unintended ones.

Bob,
"some entity will start developing the robots believing that all possible consequences have been covered," they will without fail.
