U.S. Congressional Panel Warns Of China's Military Buildup -- Kyodo News

A U.S. congressional panel warned Thursday of China's increasing military buildup, especially in nuclear capability and naval forces, saying the balance of power in the Asia-Pacific region appears to be shifting to China.

"China's nuclear forces over the next three to five years will expand considerably," the bipartisan U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission said in its annual report.

The enlargement of China's nuclear force will potentially weaken U.S. extended deterrence, "particularly with respect to Japan," it said.
