Russian News Media Is Reporting That Moscow Is Now Considering Launching ‘Surgical Strikes’ On Ukraine Military Positions

Russia Considering ‘Surgical Strike’ on Ukraine - Report -- RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, July 14 (RIA Novosti) – Moscow is considering “surgical retaliatory strikes” on the Ukrainian territory after the standoff has led to first civilian victims among Russians on Russia’s territory, a Kremlin source told Kommersant Monday.

“Our patience is not boundless,” the source told the newspaper, stressing that “this means not a massive action but exclusively targeted single strikes on positions from which the Russian territory is fired at.”

The Russian side “knows for sure the site where the fire comes from,” the source said.

Update #2: Ukraine says it has made gains against rebels as Russia 'considers strikes' -- The Guardian
Update #3: In Russia, growing push to launch strikes on Ukraine over alleged deadly border shelling -- Washington Post

My Comment: Rumors of Russia launching targeted strikes against Ukrainian military positions are probably true. What is also not helping the situation are repeated Ukrainian and Russian violations of each others air space .... apparently Ukraine invaded Russia's air space only yesterday for strafing runs on the Ukraine - Russian border. As these tensions and warnings rise .... followed by repeated air space violations .... expect more reports like this one .... Kiev says military plane downed by shots 'likely' from Russia -- AFP

What I find worrisome is that my own contacts in Moscow .... who have always talked to me about Russia's role in Ukraine .... have now gone quiet. One of my closest friends told me early this morning that the word has been sent out that no one is to talk about Ukraine .... that Putin will soon be returning from his Latin America tour and a decision will soon be made on what will Russia do on the Ukraine - Russian border.

My prediction .... Russia will up it's military presence on the Russian - Ukraine border from 10,000 - 12,000 to probably 30,000. Aircraft fighters and anti-aircraft missile units will be deployed .... and .... this is the big news .... if the fighting continues to escalate and there are more cross shelling attacks and Ukrainian jet fighters violating Russian air space .... do not be surprised if Moscow lays the groundwork to announce a no-fly zone over the Russian - Ukraine border as early as next week.

Update #4: Just heard this on the radio .... Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin .... has just said that no mass-scale operation considered, only targeted strikes on positions that were shelling Russia.

1) If .... and it is a big if .... a Russian no fly zone will mean the end of Ukraine's air cover for their military operations. This will them make it incredibly dangerous for Ukrainian military units to operate .... especially in a region where they are seen as the invaders.

2) The battle for Luhansk is at the airport .... not the city. Ukrainian news is reporting that the blockade at the airport has been broken .... other news sources (like Al Jazeera) are saying no.

3) Thank you about the Cryptome news .... I visit their site every day or two .... I will be reading-up on their recent releases later tonight.

Russia may demand the minimum of Ukraine withdrawal out of artillery range of the border. A no fly zone would be interesting from the reasons you state and also Russian provisions for use of the zone by Russians and non-Ukrainians.
